Why You Might Want This Card

Riding the Amazon Prime Beast

It’s no secret: Amazon Prime has taken online shopping to a whole new level, adding the Prime channel, discounts on Whole Foods purchases and even delivery for Prime. So why not offer a Chase card that collects on all this like a boss? As a Prime member, you get 5% back at Amazon.com and Whole Foods, plus 2% back at restaurants, gas and drugstores. And 1% back on everything else. Once approved for the card, you’ll also get a $100 Amazon.com gift card loaded onto your account as a welcome bonus. The easiest way to use your rewards is right back at Amazon with no minimum amount required. Or you can use points toward gift cards or cash back. You can also redeem for travel through Chase, but it is worth noting this is different than -- and can't be mixed with -- your Ultimate Rewards points. Besides, the value is still just 1 cent, so it isn't worth the trouble since there is no incentive to going this route.

It is worth noting a better value on Amazon spends can be found by getting the Chase Ink Cash card which has a 5x spend at Staples. Then buy gift cards for Amazon. With the 1.8 cent value of Chase points you are looking at 9% back instead of 5%. And the Ink card has a 50,000 point signup bonus.

Bottom Line

This card was featured in Wirecutter as a no-brainer for frequent Amazon and Whole Foods shoppers, but the numbers just don't add up to beat out other cards. It will count against the 5/24 rule, so you'll probably be losing out on another card bonus worth $500+. By the numbers, if you are in this hobby, the only time this card makes sense is if you spend over $10,000 at Amazon/Whole Foods AND you won't be using those dollars to meet minimum spends on other cards.

If don't want to go through the hassle of the Amazon gift cards with the Chase Ink, and you are looking for the highest value back on Amazon we recommend getting the business version as it won't count against your 5/24.
