The Highlights
Bonvoy holds a unique place in this hobby. That’s because the points are a solid value for hotel reservations at the world's largest hotel chain AND Bonvoy points transfer to other point systems. In fact, Bonvoy has more transfer partners than Amex, Citi and Chase combined!!
This creates a unique situation, similar to Chase Ultimate Rewards points. There are nearly no flight or hotel situations that Bonvoy can’t solve. For this reason, we tend to use other hotel points (Hilton in particular) and save our Bonvoy points for unique situations, especially if you want to travel to any exotic locations.
The challenge is the value isn't great on transfers. We'll generally only use transfers for a points top off to buy a flight. Otherwise, we'll use our Bonvoy points for hotel rooms, especially in those hard to book places since Marriott has the most hotels globally.

Marriott Bonvoy Silver Elite
Earned after 10 nights or comes automatically with the (Marriott Bonvoy Boundless) and the (Marriott Bonvoy Business American Express Card).

Earned after 25 nights or comes automatically with the (Platinum Amex Card) and the (Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant).

Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite
Earned after 50 nights or after spending $75,000 in a year on the Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant Amex card.
Platinum Elite Benefits include all Gold benefits plus:

Earned after 75 nights.

Ambassador Elite is earned after 100 nights and adds Ambassador service and Your24, where you can choose your check-in and check-out time.
What to Know Before Canceling
Marriott points are safe in your Marriott account, even after you cancel the credit cards that built up your points. The expiration of these points are after 24 months of inactivity, but with tons of outside point systems to transfer to and the ability to pool points with other Marriott members at no cost, there should be no problem keeping your account open and active.
